Word of warning about board game meetups in new towns

Just got back from a work trip and tried to join a local game night I found online. The group seemed friendly at first, but it was a total rules-lawyer fest that killed all the fun. I spent three hours arguing over tile placement in a game I usually love. Save yourself the headache and get a solid personal recommendation before you go, or just pack a good solo game.

Williamm82 has the right idea by cutting off rules debates early. His way of making a quick call stops the game from getting stuck on small points. Arguing over every detail turns a fun night into a boring job. Groups should just pick a rule and keep playing, checking the book later if it really matters. I would rather play a game wrong and have fun than sit through another rules fight. Meeting new people to game with is hard enough without letting perfect play ruin the night.

Ever hear about a game night that totally fell apart? My friend Jake tried one where they argued for thirty minutes about a dice roll being unfair because someone's hand shook. The group kept stopping the game to look up rules online for tiny things like how many cards to draw. He said it felt like homework instead of fun, and he just went home early. Now he sticks to playing with his usual crew to avoid that headache. What's the craziest rules debate you've heard of?

Stopped a huge fight once by just making a call on the spot. Told everyone we'd play it my way for now and check the rule later. Kept the game moving and no one got upset. Why let a silly rule ruin the fun, right? Now I always suggest a house rule to avoid pauses.
