I thought those new ceramic welding blankets were just hype until a job in Toledo

Honestly, I was setting up for a big pipe weld in a tight corner last month. My old fiberglass blanket kept snagging and I was losing my mind. The foreman handed me one of those ceramic ones, said it could take direct flame. Ngl, I figured it would melt in five minutes. That thing held up for three full hours of heavy spark spray without a single burn through. Has anyone else switched over to these, or am I just late to the party?

Yeah, it's like that with a lot of gear now. I had the same surprise with some new heat-resistant gloves last year. You get used to stuff failing a certain way, so when something actually works like the box says, it feels like a small miracle. Makes you wonder what else we're all still putting up with that's secretly been solved.

Wait, you got three full hours out of a ceramic blanket under heavy spark spray? Thats wild. Ive used mine a few times but never pushed it that hard, I always figured theyd start falling apart after an hour or two. My old fiberglass blankets would be toast after one good job with slag bouncing off them. Now I gotta try it on a long pipe job myself, see if it really holds up without that burnt smell. Makes me wonder how many other things weve been wasting time and money on with the old school gear.
