Question about using a magnetic jig for tube welding

I was real skeptical when my buddy handed me a magnetic jig for tube welding last month. Figured it was just another gimmick that would slip around and mess up my alignment. But I had to tack together some 3 inch schedule 40 pipe for a job in Pittsburgh and gave it a shot. That thing held rock solid and saved me like 20 minutes of wrestling with clamps. Has anybody else had good luck with these or am I just lucky so far?

Figured it was a gimmick too but that magnet surprised me.
