Shoutout to the old timer in Mobile who called me out on my weld prep
For years I just wire brushed and went for it on pressure vessel seams. Thought I was saving time. This guy, Frank, watched me for maybe two minutes. He said, 'Kid, you're leaving enough junk in that joint to fail a hydro.' He was right. I started grinding to bright metal and beveling every single time, no shortcuts. My x-ray reject rate dropped from like 8% to under 1% in six months. Anyone else have a moment where an old school trick completely changed your routine?

Sometimes the shortcut is the real skill.

Finding the quick path often shows you really get how a system works. It's not about skipping work, it's about smart work. That's the kind of skill that actually saves time and effort.

My old boss in construction always said a shortcut just means you missed the foundational steps, alex307. That kind of thinking can lead to a shaky house.
