Used to hate fitting slips, now I get why older guys love em
Was on a 400psi steam drum job in Gary last month and kept fighting the fit up. This old timer just said stop forcing it, let the slip find its spot. He was right, got a perfect root pass after I stopped muscling it. Anybody else had that moment where a habit you swore was dumb turned out to be the whole trick?
Took me way too long to learn that on flanges too, you can fight alignment all day or just let the weight settle and the gap closes itself. Slips and spools all have a sweet spot, forcing them just makes the root wander and you end up grinding it back out. Now I always back off the clamps and give it a second before I burn in.
