My book club pick totally bombed and got shredded at the meeting

Last month I chose a literary novel for my group that won all these awards, but the meeting turned into a disaster. Six out of eight people said they couldn't even finish it because the writing was too dense and slow. I spent $35 on a hardcover thinking it would spark deep discussion, but instead everyone just complained for 20 minutes straight. Finally the host suggested we ditch the book and just talk about a movie we all liked instead. Has anyone else had a book pick completely crash and burn like that?

I used to think picking award winners was a sure thing, but after one similar disaster I realized highbrow doesn't always mean good for a group.

You ever try polling the group beforehand? Saved me from picking a dud more than once.

@laura_allen yeah, people get way too worked up over award picks. It's just movies or books, not life or death.
