My book club told me I was 'summarizing instead of analyzing' and it stung but they were right

After our debate on The Nickel Boys, someone said my take just listed what happened chapter by chapter. I had to sit with that for a few days before I saw the pattern. Now I force myself to pick one theme per meeting and look for how the author built it through specific scenes. Has anyone else had a group call them out on something that actually improved how they read?

Honestly, good for your group for telling you that. That stings in the moment but it's actually a huge gift. I had a similar thing happen where someone pointed out I was just talking about what the characters did instead of why it mattered. It made me slow down and actually pay attention to the author's choices instead of just racing through the plot.

Yeah Nancy's right, that "why it matters" part is where the real reading happens.
