My book club's whole vibe broke down over a single character's motivation
It happened last Tuesday at our monthly meetup. We were discussing that new bestseller everyone's reading, and everything was fine until someone said the main character's big choice in chapter 12 made no sense. Suddenly, the room split. Half of us thought she was being brave, the other half called her selfish. What started as a normal chat turned into a full-on debate with people talking over each other. I tried to steer it back by asking 'What would you have done in her shoes?' but that just made it worse. Now our group chat is silent, which is weird because we usually talk every day. Has anyone else had a book club meeting go totally sideways over a character's decision? How did you get the conversation back on track without people feeling dismissed?

Chapter 12 meltdowns are the worst. I like what @henderson.oscar said about switching drinks to keep things calm. Did anyone bring up how the character's past might explain that selfish or brave choice?

Oh man, that's a classic book club meltdown. Had something similar happen over a character who turned down a huge inheritance. Half the group called it noble, the other half said it was just stupid pride. Things got heated enough that someone's wine got knocked over. The silence after is the worst part. We got past it by the next host picking a totally different kind of book, something less about big moral choices. Starting fresh with a new story helped everyone reset without having to rehash the fight.

Yeah, the silence after the wine spill is brutal. We had a rule after our big fight: no more booze for serious debate books. Switch to coffee or soda. Forces people to actually talk instead of just getting louder. Picking a new genre next was smart, gives everyone an easy out.
