Our '1984' book club fight taught me to ask more questions

Last month, my book club got into a huge argument about Big Brother and control. I usually just state my opinion and move on, but this time I made myself ask why others felt the way they did. It actually made the debate way more interesting, and I learned a ton, lol. Now I always start by asking questions before sharing my own take. Has anyone else picked up a simple trick like this from your book club chats?

Remember when I used to just lecture everyone on my interpretation. Took me way too long to realize how annoying that was. Asking a question first is basically my apology for those early years.

Man, my buddy Tom was exactly like that. He'd corner you at parties and explain his whole take on movie endings like it was a college class. People literally hid from him when they saw him coming. The day he finally just asked "what did you think about it?" instead of launching into his speech, you could see the whole room relax. He basically had to rebuild every chat from the ground up after those years.

Look, not everyone minds a deep dive into movie endings. Some folks actually enjoy hearing a well thought out take, even at parties. perez.pat, maybe your lectures just needed the right crowd, not an apology.
