Our book club picked a 900 page sci-fi epic and it completely fell apart

We voted on 'The Starfarer's Lament' for our March read, thinking a big book would give us lots to talk about. After three weeks, only two of the eight people had finished it, and the meeting was just people complaining about the slow middle section. I learned that picking a book just for its length is a bad idea if you want everyone to actually read it. Has your group ever had a book that was just too much for people to get through?

Big projects always look easier at the start.

Ever try a shorter book with a fast plot to get people back on track? That worked for our group after a big book flopped.
