Our book club spent 45 minutes debating if the narrator was unreliable when the text said it was a ghost

We were at the library meeting room last Tuesday night. Bev kept insisting the strange events were just the main character's imagination. I pointed to page 147 where it literally says "the ghost moved the vase." She said that was a metaphor. We actually pulled out three different editions to check. The moderator finally had to call a vote. Has anyone else had a member refuse to accept what's plainly on the page?

Yeah, Bev sounds exhausting, I've totally had people argue with the actual words on the page too.

And those are the ones who somehow missed the whole point of reading comprehension in school. You can’t argue with black and white text on a page. It just gets old really fast.

Black and white text can still be interpreted different ways though, context matters a ton.
