Our book club split over a romance subplot, oof

Last Tuesday in Austin, we were debating a literary fiction pick and two members nearly walked out because they thought the romance angle ruined the whole book, while three others called it the best part. I tried to steer us to the author's main theme, but everyone just kept rehashing the same two scenes for 40 minutes. Has anyone else had a book club fight get this heated, and how do you get people to move past one element without killing the conversation?
