Our club picked a 600 page doorstop and 5 of us quit before the first meeting
Three years back my Tuesday night book club in Akron got talked into reading a 612 page historical novel because one member swore it was life changing. We meet at a diner on Market St and by week two, five of the nine regulars had bailed, mostly because the first 200 pages are a guy walking through a forest. Last month we finally made a rule that whoever suggests the pick has to write one paragraph on why, and it has not stopped the arguing one bit. Turns out the fight was never about the book, it was about who gets to sound smart at the table, which is honestly a harder thing to fix. How does your group handle the one person who always pushes the longest book on the shelf?
