Rant: my book club told me to stop reading ahead, and I finally get why they were right after 14 months
I've been in the same book club here in Tucson for about 14 months and I always finish the pick way early because I read fast. At our meeting for the March pick I mentioned what happens to the brother at the end before we even hit the halfway point, and a woman named Priya just looked at me and said, "You keep taking the discovery part away from us." That hit me harder than I expected, because I honestly thought reading ahead just meant I was prepared. For the next book I forced myself to stop at the assigned chapters each week, which nearly killed me the first two nights. What I noticed is that the group actually talks way more when we are all guessing together instead of me sitting there quiet because I already know how it ends. Now I hold my thoughts until we get to the section, and our last meeting ran 40 minutes past the usual time because people had real stuff to say. Have any of you dealt with a reader who finishes early, and how did your group handle it?
Guilty as charged, I'm the jerk who reads the last page first just to make sure my fave survives. My group started doing spoiler free check ins where we just say how far we got and nobody spills anything. Works better than I expected, mostly because I can't keep my mouth shut otherwise.
