Reading 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' changed how I see my dog

Last month, my book club picked 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' by Garth Stein. I went in thinking it was just another dog story with a gimmicky narrator. But about halfway through, I realized the dog's voice made me rethink all the times my own mutt just sits there staring at me. I started paying attention to his tail wags and head tilts in a different way. The book made me wonder if my dog has been trying to tell me stuff this whole time, like when he nudges my hand after a bad shift at the bar. Three years ago, I would've brushed that off as coincidence, but now I'm not so sure. Has anyone else read a book that totally changed how you relate to your pet?

I dunno, I feel like we give them way too much credit sometimes. My dog stares at me when he wants food or needs to go out, that's about it. Pretty sure he's not picking up on my mood shifts.

Tbh that book had me side-eyeing my dog for like a week straight.
