Shoutout to the guy in my Denver book club who called me out
We were arguing about 'The Great Gatsby' and I kept saying Gatsby was just a rich guy who threw parties. This guy, Mike, asked me point blank 'What about the green light?' I had totally missed that whole symbol thing. It made me realize I was just skimming for plot and not looking deeper. Anyone else get called out on missing a book's big theme?

The rabbits not being pets was a real wake-up call for me too, @the_simon.

Totally get that. Missed the whole "rabbit" thing in Of Mice and Men for years. Thought it was just about a farm. Felt pretty dumb when someone pointed it out. Happens to everyone.

My tenth grade English teacher had to stop the whole class to explain the rabbits weren't just pets. I was taking notes on crop rotation. The look she gave me could have wilted lettuce. I still get a little warm thinking about it.
