That $50 hardcover special edition was a total ripoff

I dropped $50 on a limited edition hardcover from a small press for my book club's monthly pick, and the binding split right down the spine after one read. Turns out they glued it together cheap instead of sewing it. Has anyone else gotten burned by fancy book club editions that fall apart?

Yeah, you got hit with a perfect binding job. Those small presses sometimes cut corners to keep the cost down on limited runs. Next time, give the spine a gentle flex test before you buy if you can see it in person. If you already own it and want to save it, a little PVA glue worked into the hinge with a toothpick can hold it together for a while. But that $50 should have bought you a sewn binding, no question.

$50 for a book that falls apart is a joke. Perfect binding on a limited run is just laziness from the publisher. The PVA glue trick works but you shouldn't have to fix a new book.

$50 for a sewn binding is a steal compared to what real bookbinders charge for that level of quality.
