The one page trick that saved our book club from falling apart
Our little book club in Sacramento almost broke up last spring because nobody could agree on anything and half the group never finished the book. We would show up, someone would say they loved it, someone else would say they hated it, and we would just stare at each other for two hours. I was ready to quit. Then my friend Dana, who teaches fourth grade, said her students do better when they get one question ahead of time instead of fifteen. So we tried it. I write one single page with three questions and text it out four days before we meet, and that is it. The change was nuts. Last Tuesday we talked about the ending of a book for 90 whole minutes and nobody checked their phone once. I think the page works because people who did not finish still have a way in. Has anyone else tried giving out questions before the meeting, or do you all just wing it?
