Unpopular opinion: letting one person pick all the books for 3 months killed our club
We tried a rotating picker system last fall, but one member grabbed the December, January, and February slots back to back and we read three 600 page doorstops in a row. Attendance dropped from 11 people to 4 by the February meeting at my kitchen table here in Boise. Has anyone found a fairer way to split picks so one person cannot hog the calendar?
Man we had almost the exact same thing go down in my club. One guy snagged October, November, and December and we spent the holidays slogging through a trilogy about the fall of Rome, like 700 pages each. By the December meeting it was me, him, and two other people eating chips at my buddy's place wondering why we even bothered. What finally worked for us was a draft night, everybody throws their name in a hat and we pick slots one at a time so nobody can double up without the whole group watching. We also capped it at one pick per person per quarter and set a page limit around 400 so nobody sneaks in a monster. Attendance came back up to nine by spring and people actually show up again. The draft thing sounds a little silly but it stopped all the hurt feelings cold.
