Appreciation post: That customer who hated my endbands changed how I do them

I used to glue my endbands on after casing in, and a customer told me they looked messy and uneven. At first I was annoyed (like, who are you to judge my craft?), but then I looked closer and yeah, they were right. So I switched to wrapping the endband fabric around the spine before gluing, and now they sit flush and tight every time. It added about 10 minutes to each book, but the finish is way cleaner. Has anyone else had a harsh critique that actually improved your process?

Wait, they wrapped the fabric around the spine BEFORE gluing? That's genius.

Wrapping before gluing means the spine fabric sticks to itself more than the pages. Good luck when that thing flexes open a few dozen times.

Honestly, I used to think wrapping before gluing was just the normal way to do it. But yeah, hearing you say that about the spine fabric sticking to itself more than the pages totally changed my mind. That makes so much sense now, ngl.
