Beeswax blend cracked my spine after 2 days, here's the fix that saved it
Tbh I was in my basement workshop last Tuesday, finishing up a run of 6 journals for a local market in Portland. I thought my 60/40 beeswax and resin mix was solid, but the first one cracked right down the spine overnight. Turns out the temperature was too low when I applied it, so the wax set uneven and pulled apart. I reheated the whole batch to 180 degrees, added a splash of lavender oil, and waited longer before pressing. Has anyone else had their adhesive fail at lower temps, or do you all stick to a different ratio?

Tbh that temp thing is such a classic beginner trap, and honestly it applies to way more than just bookbinding. I've seen the same exact pattern with people trying to fix their own shoes or even baking bread, where they rush the cooling and everything pulls apart. The lavender oil trick is smart though, it probably helped the wax flow more evenly. I think we all have that moment where we blame the materials, but really it's us not respecting the environment around the project. Once you learn to wait for the right conditions, it feels like everything else in life gets a little easier too. Good on you for catching it before the whole market run was ruined.
