Can we talk about getting the grain direction right on book cloth?

I spent three whole hours trying to figure out why my cover boards kept warping on a custom journal, and it was just because the cloth grain was running the wrong way. My friend said 'it's just paper, how hard can it be' and I almost lost it. How do you guys check grain direction quickly before you start cutting?

Ever just hold it up and bend it a little? The way it folds easy is the grain.

My dad taught me that trick with a piece of cardboard once. Totally saved a school project.
