Comparison test: Tite-Bond vs. Elmer's glue for book repairs

Switched from Elmer's to Tite-Bond for spine repairs on a 1920s novel last week. The Elmer's let go after 3 pages turned, but Tite-Bond held tight through the whole thing. Same technique, same clamp time, way different result. Anyone else notice a big difference in adhesive brands for old books?

emmawood asked about cleaning the spine first - which yeah I definitely should have done with the Elmer's, but in my defense I was impatient and maybe a little dumb. The Tite-Bond I slapped on that same dusty spine like a total amateur and it still held, so either I got lucky or that stuff is just magic for old paper. My dog actually chewed up a vintage paperback after I fixed it with Tite-Bond and the spine stayed intact through the whole ordeal, which is either impressive or just proof my dog has expensive taste in chew toys. Probably shoulda cleaned it anyway though, that's a good tip.

Did you clean the spine surface with alcohol before applying either glue?
