I mixed PVA glue with a bit of water for a repair and the spine bubbled up

I was fixing a cookbook from 1958 and thinned my PVA with maybe 10% water to make it spread easier. The next morning, the spine cloth had these weird, wavy bubbles all along it. Has anyone else had glue do this, and what's a better way to get a smooth, thin layer?

Oh man, that's a classic. My buddy tried the same thing on an old paperback and it puckered up like a prune. He figured out PVA and water can react weird with some older book cloth or paper, it doesn't dry even. For a smooth layer, he started using the glue straight but puts it on with a thin brush, almost dry brushing it on. Seems to work better without the water messing with the materials.

Ugh, I used to thin my glue too! Learned the hard way it just makes a mess on old stuff. Now I use it straight and barely touch the brush to the surface, works way better.

It's like how we overcomplicate simple fixes in other areas too, right?
