Old timer told me my glue was too watery, changed everything

Guy at a bindery in Portland saw me using PVA straight from the jug. He pulled out this thick paste, smelled like a chemical lab. Said I was ruining the spine strength. Switched to a stiffer mix and my covers stopped bubbling. Anyone else get a weird glue lecture from a veteran?

Ngl that's basically how it works with everything though. Old heads have been doing stuff long enough that they know what actually lasts and what looks good for a week. I swear half the tricks in trades are just passed down because someone ruined enough stuff to learn the hard way.

Told my buddy the same thing and his books lay flat now.
