PVA vs paste, I had it completely backwards for 2 years

I started using wheat paste for everything because everyone online swore it was reversible and archival. Then I tried PVA on a rebind last Thursday and the spine just moved the way it should, no curling, no waiting around for hours. The paste was making me fight the cloth on every single turn-in. I still use paste for paper repairs, but for covers and hinges I'm not going back. Anyone else find that the 'right' glue depends more on the material than the tradition?

Paste is the only real glue for books, PVA is just fancy school glue.
