Spent $180 on a lying caliper, so I'll keep using my $15 plastic gauge
I picked up a digital caliper for $180 thinking it would finally give me dead-on board thickness for my case bindings, but it drifted almost 0.3mm over a single afternoon of measuring. My cheap plastic gauge from the hardware store in Boise has matched my old brass one for two years, and I trust it more than the fancy one. Anyone else find that the pricey measuring tools cause more doubt than the cheap ones?
Why would a $180 tool drift like that? Heat from your hands can mess with cheap sensors, but at that price it should hold steady. My gut says the fancy one is just poorly made and the price tag is all marketing. The plastic gauge works because it doesn't pretend to be precise down to the hundredth of a millimeter, so you know what you're getting. I'd return the caliper if you still can.
