Spent $40 on a bone folder and it changed my scoring game

I always just used the back of a butter knife to score my cover paper. It worked fine, I guess, but my folds were never super crisp. Saw a post here about bone folders and decided to grab one. It was about forty bucks for a decent one. The difference is crazy. The point is perfect for getting into tight corners on small pamphlets, and the flat edge gives a clean, sharp crease every single time. My last batch of notebooks looked way more professional. I feel dumb for waiting so long. What other simple tools made a big difference for you guys?

My buddy was making these little zines and his folds were always kinda wavy. He was using a plastic card, like an old gift card. I told him to just get a bone folder but he said it was a waste of money. He finally caved and got one, and the next time I saw his stuff the creases were like, razor sharp. He said the rounded tip let him burnish the spine of a staple-bound booklet without tearing the paper. Total game changer for his little projects.

My old art teacher swore by bone folders, and I finally bought one last year. The difference on a simple center fold for a greeting card is insane, way cleaner than a credit card edge. @carter.gavin is right about the rounded tip, it's perfect for working the fold open without leaving a mark. I use mine on everything now, even just flattening tape in my sketchbook.

Honestly, my butter knife method was looking pretty sad compared to that.
