That clamp tip from a retired finisher saved my hinge joints

An old guy at the shop told me to use wax paper between the cover and the block before pressing, said it stops the moisture from warping the hinges. Tried it on a rebind this week, first time my joints closed flat without that ugly ripple. Has anyone else got a trick like that they swore by until they actually tested it?

A buddy of mine swore by spraying the text block edges with a light mist of water before casing in, said it relaxed the paper just enough. He tried it on a thick novel and the pages came out with a slight wave that drove him nuts for a week. He went back to plain old PVA after that, but he still talks about it like it almost worked.
