That old sewing frame I fixed with shoelaces and a clamp

About three months back my 1880s sewing frame cracked right along the press screw hole. I used a leather shoelace to bind it and added a C-clamp for pressure, and now the tension is actually better than before. It's not pretty but it holds signatures perfectly. Has anyone else bodged a repair on vintage binding gear?

Figured I'd finally met my match with a cracked spine, but nope, just my luck.

Did you have to adjust the clamp tension as the leather settled, or did it hold steady right away?

Clamp needs tweaking every few days with leather.
