The 1998 Sewing Frame That Still Beats My New One

Last Tuesday I was organizing the workshop and found my old sewing frame from trade school. It's a simple wooden one, nothing fancy, but I remember using it on every single book back in 1998. I set it up next to my modern metal frame and ran the same 5-signature pamphlet through both. The old frame held the pages steadier and my stitching came out straighter, no question. I guess sometimes the newer tools don't always mean better results, and I'm curious if anyone else kept their older equipment around for the same reason.

Compare the two frames side by side after a few months of daily use, not just one clean run. That old wood might be worn in just right, but does it still hold tension when the humidity changes or after a thousand stitches? I've got a 20 year old press that I swear by, but I had to re-glue the base on it twice, so I'm not sure I trust it over the new one for long runs. What does your old frame do that yours new one can't, besides the one straight pass?
