Vent: That $80 book press I bought was a total waste of money

Everyone says you need a proper book press for good results but I grabbed a cheap one from a craft store and all it did was leave weird uneven marks on my covers. Has anyone had luck making a simple press from plywood and clamps instead?

What makes a press so bad that ruining things is its main talent? I worked on printing equipment years ago and saw a press that would jam every third sheet, tear the paper, and somehow still get blamed on the operator. It's like that press had a personal vendetta against anything that wasn't scrap metal.
