Visited a hand paper mill in Portland and now I get why my Japanese paper costs so much
Last Saturday I drove up to a little shop in Portland that makes paper by hand, mostly for bookbinders and printmakers. Watching them pull sheets was wild, the guy dipped a mould into a vat and shook it side to side in this rhythm that took him years to learn. He told me one sheet takes about 4 minutes just for the forming part, not counting drying and pressing. I always thought my imported paper was overpriced at $8 a sheet, but now I see the labor behind it. The fibers also run in a specific direction when they hand pull, which changes how the book sews. I bought a few sheets to test in my next project and I'm curious if anyone here has used hand made paper for endpapers or if it's too fragile for a full cover. What's been your experience with handmade vs machine made paper in terms of hinge strength?
