Was gluing my headbands wrong for three years

I was finishing a custom order for a client in Austin, a big poetry collection. The headband kept coming loose after a few days. My friend Sarah, who runs a bindery in Seattle, watched me work over video call and said, 'You're putting the glue on the text block before the headband, right?' I had been gluing the headband material first, then trying to stick it to the book. She explained the glue needs to grab the book spine directly. I switched the order and the next five books held perfectly. Anyone else have a simple step they were getting backwards?

Spent a whole season trying to fix a leaky outdoor faucet. I kept replacing the washer inside the handle, but it would still drip. Finally watched a video where the guy said the real seal is in a separate packing nut behind the handle. I had been fixing the wrong part the entire time. One five minute fix after that and it was totally dry. It's amazing how the order of operations changes everything.

Ever try to fix a wobbly chair by just tightening the screws? I used to crank down on the leg bolts, but the wobble always came back. Turns out the real issue was the cross braces underneath were loose. Tightening those first made the whole frame solid, then the leg bolts actually held. Felt pretty dumb for missing that.

And my buddy Steve spent an hour replacing the valve stem on his toilet because it kept running, only to realize later the fill tube was just kinked behind the tank. @skylerrobinson is right, you always gotta check the simple stuff first before tearing everything apart.
