Found a weird fuzzy orange thing on a shrub outside my kid's school in Rochester
I was waiting to pick up my daughter on Tuesday and noticed this bush by the fence had these bumpy orange growths all over the stems. I took a bunch of photos with my phone and even pulled one off to look closer, it felt kind of spongy and gross. I asked the school groundskeeper and he had no clue, just said it shows up every summer and he leaves it alone. Pretty sure it is some kind of rust fungus but I have never seen it take over a whole shrub like that. Does anyone know what this is and if I should tell the school to worry about it?
Watching a school groundskeeper just shrug at an alien orange blob is peak Rochester energy, honestly. That fuzzy stuff is likely cedar apple rust, and it needs two host plants to do its thing, so the real question is whether some juniper tree nearby is quietly pulling the strings. Pulling one off with your bare hands was brave, those things look like they'd taste terrible. I'd still shoot the school an email with your pics just so there's a record, even if it turns out to be harmless.
