Hot take: I saw a guy at the Portland Rose Garden last fall who changed how I think about plant tags.

He was taking notes on his phone for every single rose, not just the name but the soil feel and which bees were visiting. I realized I'd been treating plant labels like museum plaques instead of real growing notes. Who else actually uses their garden visits to gather data, not just take pretty pictures?

What kind of notes help you the most later? I keep a simple note on my phone for each garden visit. I jot down the plant name, the date I saw it, and one thing I noticed, like "leaves looked dusty" or "full sun but not wilted." That one detail is often the clue I need when something in my own yard struggles.

My plant notes just say "pink one" and "smells nice." That guy would be so disappointed in me.
