I finally figured out why my pothos kept dying, and it was the pot
I killed 3 pothos plants in 6 months and could not figure out why. I was watering them the same as my other plants and they still turned yellow and mushy. Then my neighbor who has like 40 plants told me to check the drainage holes. Turns out my cute ceramic pots had no holes at all, so water was just sitting at the bottom rotting the roots. I moved everything into plain terracotta pots from the hardware store for about $4 each and my pothos has grown 5 new leaves in 3 weeks. I feel kind of silly for not checking sooner. Has anyone else made this same mistake with a plant they loved?
Root rot from no drainage is sneaky because the plant looks fine for weeks before it crashes, so you blame yourself instead of the setup. What gets people is that the pot sitting in a saucer of runoff looks the same as a pot holding a swamp. Next time you repot, soak the terracotta once before planting so it doesn't pull all the moisture out of your fresh soil.
