I finally stopped trying to grow tomatoes from seed after a trip to the local greenhouse
I was at Miller's Greenhouse in Springfield last month, just looking at their starter plants. The owner, an older lady named Carol, saw me picking up a seed packet and said, 'Honey, with our short spring, you'll be waiting until August for fruit.' She walked me over to their 6-inch tall 'Early Girl' starters, already flowering. I bought two on her advice and had ripe tomatoes by the 4th of July. Has anyone else in a cooler climate had better luck just buying established plants?

My first try with seeds gave me three sad little sprouts that died when I forgot to water them during a haul to Boise. Now I just grab the biggest starter plant I can find at the hardware store. It saves me from my own bad memory.
