Just heard a guy at the garden center call succulents 'the lazy plant' and I can't stop thinking about it
I was picking up a $6 jade plant in Tucson last weekend and this guy next to me told his friend succulents are for people who kill everything else, which felt harsh. On one hand he kind of has a point since they forgive you when you forget to water for 2 weeks, but on the other hand my jade has been with me 4 years and I've learned more about light and soil from it than any fussy fern. So are easy plants real botany or just beginner stuff? Where do you all land on this?

My jade plant is 4 years old and survived a move from Phoenix to a place with north facing windows, which no fern would have done. That guy at the garden center has it backwards. Easy plants are not dumb plants, they just handle neglect better than most, and that actually teaches you how to read a plant. I learned more about soil drainage from watching my jade's leaves go soft than I ever did from a care guide. Succulents have real biology too, the way they store water and do that CAM photosynthesis thing is not simple stuff. What makes a plant beginner friendly is not the same as what makes it basic, and people mix those two up all the time.
