Letting my niece choose her own plants over family favorites

Honestly, everyone says we should stick to easy plants for beginners. But I think letting her pick what she loves gets her more into botany. Seeing her excited about a Venus flytrap changed my view.

But that excitement can crash hard when the plant dies in a month. Venus flytraps, like @taylor388 asked about, need distilled water and a winter dormancy period most beginners don't know. Starting someone with a doomed plant just teaches them failure. A hardy pothos that thrives on neglect builds real confidence first. Would you give a kid a fragile race car for their first driving lesson?

True, but that initial excitement matters too. Sometimes a hard win beats an easy one.
