My dwarf umbrella tree almost died from a lazy watering hack

I tried one of those self-watering spikes for my schefflera while I was away for a trip, came back to soggy roots and yellow leaves. Took me 3 months to get it back to healthy, and now I just stick to the good old clay pot and checking the soil with my finger. Has anyone else regretted trusting those fancy plant gadgets?
