Native wildflowers vs exotic tropicals - I made my choice after a disaster
I spent 2 years babying a rare orchid from Brazil until a surprise frost killed it overnight in my greenhouse. Switched my whole setup to local prairie species like coneflower and milkweed, and now I just let them freeze and come back every spring. Anyone else ditch the finicky imports for stuff that actually survives your weather?

oh man this reminds me of my buddy marco. he had this whole greenhouse full of like fancy pitcher plants from southeast asia. spent a fortune on humidity controllers and special soil mixes. then a heatwave hit and his AC unit failed while he was on vacation. came home to basically plant soup. now he just grows wild grapes and goldenrod in his backyard and lets them do whatever. says he sleeps better knowing he doesnt have to babysit plants anymore. i kinda get it, there's something nice about plants that just wanna be alive.

@reeseperez hit it with "plants that just wanna be alive" - that's the whole thing right there. It's like how everyone I know who tried to be a fancy home chef with sous vide machines and exotic ingredients eventually gives up and goes back to making solid tacos or grilled cheese. At some point you realize chasing the rare stuff just means you're fighting against the grain the whole time, while the hardy locals are out there thriving without breaking a sweat.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Some of us actually enjoy the challenge and the learning curve of keeping those finicky plants alive. There's a certain satisfaction in figuring out exactly what that one weird species needs.
