Overheard a guy at the nursery trash talking seedling heat mats
He was saying they waste electricity and you're better off just putting trays on top of the fridge or a water heater. I switched my pepper starts to a spot above my old boiler 3 weeks ago and they germinated just as fast.

Right? The fridge thing works but it's kind of a gamble depending on your fridge model. Some don't put off enough steady heat, especially if you're opening the door all the time. The water heater trick is better for consistency, I've done that with jalapenos and they popped in 5 days flat. Just have to watch out for getting them too hot if your unit runs a lot, then you're cooking the seeds instead of germinating them. A little trial and error with placement and you basically get the same results as a heat mat without plugging anything in.
