Tried growing basil from seed vs buying starts - seed is way better
After killing 3 store bought basil plants in a row last summer, I grabbed a $3 packet of Genovese seeds from the garden center on a whim. I planted them in a 6 inch pot on my kitchen windowsill in late March and had way more basil than I knew what to do with by June. The roots on those seedlings were way stronger than the leggy ones I kept buying at the grocery store. Anyone else notice a big difference growing from seed for herbs?

Used to buy starts religiously, but you're totally right, seeds are way tougher and more rewarding.

Man those store bought basil plants always seem to die on me too, it's frustrating. Seeds just seem to have way more will to live, like they're built tougher from the start. Glad it worked out for you, saves money and the plants actually survive.

Dude yes, same boat exactly. I killed like four of those store basil plants in one summer before I finally tried seeds out of pure frustration. Now I just start a few seeds in a little pot on the windowsill and they're practically indestructible. They don't get all shocked and droopy like the store ones do, they just grow. Plus you get so many plants from one pack of seeds it's kind of ridiculous. I've been giving away basil plants to neighbors for the last two years because I always end up with way too many.
