Vent: I used to just toss my new plants in whatever pot I had, but after my fiddle leaf fig in a 10-inch ceramic pot got root rot last spring, I now always check for drainage holes first.
What's the one simple check you always do before repotting something new?

My friend was so proud of her new monstera. She plopped it straight into this gorgeous, expensive pot she'd been saving. It was a total cement tomb, zero holes. She watered it once and the thing just sat in a swamp. Took about three weeks for the leaves to turn yellow and give up. Now she knocks on the bottom of every pot like she's checking for a secret door.

Drilled my own drainage holes with a cheap bit, saved the pot and the plant.

Check the bit after you're done. Mine got dull fast and started chipping the ceramic instead of cutting it.
