Just realized I was cutting the crust off my tamales for 2 years and the masa was the best part all along
My abuela in San Antonio used to make tamales every December and I always scraped the filling out of the masa because I thought the corn husk stuff was just packaging. Last month my coworker brought in a batch from her mom's spot in Laredo and I tried one whole, husk and all, and the masa was soft and warm and tasted like the filling soaked into it. I've been eating like 6 of them a week since and I owe my abuela a huge apology. Has anyone else been throwing away the best part of a food without knowing it? What should I try next?
Hold on, scraping the filling out and ditching the masa is not the same as eating the husk, my guy. The husk is literally just packaging, you don't eat that part. The masa is the tamale, so yeah you were missing out big time by tossing it, but your abuela wasn't serving you corn husks to chew on. Tossing the masa is wild though, that's like eating a burger and throwing away the bun and patty to keep the lettuce. Next you should try a real bowl of pozole or menudo if you want another Mexican food you've probably been sleeping on.
