Had to choose between a diner breakfast or making my own at the truck stop last night
Pulled into a Pilot in Ohio around 10pm and had to decide between dropping $14 on a greasy omelette at the attached diner or spending 20 minutes boiling water for instant oatmeal in my cab. I went with the oatmeal because I'm trying to cut back on fried food after my last blood work came back borderline. Big mistake, I forgot my brown sugar packet at home and that stuff tastes like cardboard without it. Anyone else ever cheap out on a meal on the road and instantly regret it?

Oh man, that hit close to home. My buddy Dave did something similar last year on a run through Nebraska. He picked up a gas station breakfast sandwich that looked okay in the wrapper but turned out to be a cold, rubbery egg circle on a soggy biscuit. He ate it anyway because he was starving and then spent the next two hours regretting every bite, his stomach just gurgling and angry. He said it tasted like the inside of a gym shoe, and honestly, I believe him. Sometimes saving a few bucks just ain't worth the food misery.

I feel that "tastes like cardboard" bit deep, man. I've been there with the plain oatmeal struggle more times than I care to count. What I started doing is keeping a little Ziploc baggie of cinnamon sugar in my glove box it takes up no space and transforms that bland mess into something actually edible. Also learned the hard way that Pilot diner eggs are somehow both greasy AND dry at the same time so you might have dodged a bullet there even if your oatmeal was a sad experience.
