Rant: my coworker said to skip the coffee line and now my 15 minute break feels like 20
Last Tuesday a guy on my floor named Marcus told me he gave up the office coffee run because the line eats 8 minutes of our 15 minute break. I started packing a thermos from home instead and now I actually get to sit and eat my granola bar in peace. It sounds dumb but sitting still for a few minutes without standing in a hallway changed how the rest of my shift goes. The coffee is worse, but the time is mine. Has anyone else figured out how to squeeze real rest out of a short break like that?
The thing about the 8 minutes is that it's not just the line, it's the walking there and back plus the waiting once you're in it. I timed it once out of curiosity and the whole trip was closer to 12 minutes if the pot was empty and someone had to brew a new one. That leaves you like 3 minutes to actually sit down, which is nothing. So Marcus was right about ditching it, but the coffee line was probably eating more of your break than you thought, not less. Packing the thermos gets you the full 15 back, and that's a real chunk of time when you only get a few breaks a day.
The whole office coffee thing is a trap and Marcus basically solved it by just bringing his own. Brewing a fresh pot when you have 15 minutes is like watching paint dry while your break dies in front of you. @grantf73 is right that the walk plus the wait adds up way more than people count, so the thermos move gets you a real seat for once. My guess is half the building is standing in that hallway for coffee they don't even like.
