Showerthought: most people fill their mugs wrong for pour over coffee

I was at a friend's place last Saturday and watched him dump the grounds in, then pour water straight to the top. That's not how it works. You gotta bloom it first - like 30 seconds with just enough water to wet the grounds, then wait, then pour the rest. Makes a huge difference in taste. My buddy argued with me but I made him try it side by side and he admitted mine tasted cleaner. Anyone else notice people skipping the bloom step?

Nailed it about the bloom step. I used to skip it for years and just dump water in like I was making instant coffee. Then I tried it the right way after watching a YouTube video and felt like such an idiot. My first few attempts I'd forget and just pour water everywhere like a clumsy mess. Now I'm annoyingly proud of my pour over routine even though I still spill half the grounds on the counter.

Started using a cheap food scale to measure my beans and water. 30 grams coffee, 500 grams water. Weirdly satisfying. Also switched to a gooseneck kettle, makes the pour way easier. No more flooding the filter and spilling everywhere.

The gooseneck kettle changed everything for me too. I used to just dump water straight from a regular kettle and wonder why my coffee was always bitter. Now I weigh everything out like a total nerd and my morning routine takes twice as long but it's worth it.
