Took me 5 years to notice the difference switching to a dedicated grinder for my morning coffee at home
I bought a cheap blade grinder in 2019 and figured all coffee was pretty much the same, but last month I finally got a burr grinder and my morning cup tastes way smoother. Has anyone else had a random upgrade like that totally change their break routine?

Agree with you @mark_price, swapped to a burr grinder last year and suddenly my mornings have a whole new purpose.

Hold on, it's really just coffee though. I've used the same $20 blade grinder for like six years and I can't tell the difference from one cup to the next. People act like a burr grinder is gonna change their whole life but it's still just hot bean water in the morning. Maybe you just dialed in the water temp or the beans were fresher that day. I bet if you did a blind taste test you wouldn't even know which cup was which.

My buddy did a blind test with his blade grinder against my burr one using the same beans and water temp, and even he picked out the smoother cup every single time. It's not magic, it's just that a uniform grind keeps you from getting bitter fines one sip and watery chunks the next. If you're happy with your setup that's totally fine, but if you ever borrow someone's burr grinder for a weekend you might notice the difference for yourself.

Heard a story from my buddy Dave who swore up and down his blade grinder was fine for years. He came over one morning and I let him use my burr grinder to make his cup, same beans and everything. He took one sip and just sat there quiet for a second, then said "huh, guess I gotta get one of these now." The thing is, he went home and did his own blind test with his wife, used three different bags of beans, and she picked the burr ground cup every single time without knowing which was which. So it's not just about being fancy, it's that uneven grind really does mess with the taste in a way you don't notice until you have something better right next to it. Dave still uses his blade grinder for camping trips though, so it's not like it's useless.
